A Tribute To:
The late, great  J.C. Dickie Fears
January 04, 1948 - September 30, 2013

UTA First Negro (African-American) Cheerleader, and Fort Worth's Swing Dance - Jitterbug Champion of The Dance Floor

***
He's historically known as a groundbreaker at The University of Texas at Arlington and is one of the best Swing Dancers ever to grace the dance floor during his era.

In fall of 1966 Dickie-O' Fears'  journey began at Arlington State College, which would later become The University of Texas at Arlington. After a friend suggested to him to apply at UTA because he enjoyed going to school there. Shortly after that, Dickie-O' followed suit and was accepted at the university during an era when racial tensions were running high.

Having a kindred spirit he spent his first few years getting to know other students on campus while working two part-time jobs to pay for his education.

In the spring of 1970, Dickie-O'  junior year, he decided to get a better feel for his college experience by participating in campus activities. Having no prior training as a cheerleader he thought cheerleading may suit him well because of its joyfulness, and cheerleaders are always the first to be seen around campus. After trying out for the team he was chosen as a finalist, and J.C. Dickie Fears became UTA's first African-American cheerleader.

Furthermore, after receiving 853 votes he became the cheerleading squad co-captain as well as one of the school class favorites on his great journey at The University of Texas at Arlington.

Racism at UTA formerly known as Arlington State College

J.C. Dickie Fears to be among the first 27 African-American students to attend the University of Texas in the late '60s where the Rebels theme was already instated as the school's mascot and the Confederate Naval Jack flag was their unofficial school banner.

Dickie Fears said the big Rebel symbol didn’t bother him. But he pointed out how important a symbol it was at the predominantly white campus.

“It seemed like a lot of people worshipped the Confederate flag. It seemed like it was a little more than school spirit,” he said. “To me, the flag had racism that I didn’t care for.”

Being the school first African-American cheerleader, Dickie-O' did not purchase a class ring because it was designed with a Rebels symbol engraved on it. He also refused to wear a cheerleading uniform with the Confederate flag on it as well and urged administrators to drop the Rebels theme as the University’s mascot.

Thank You!

Some forty years late a committee of alumni, students, and staff got together to designed a new class ring.  In the fall of 2009, J.C. Dickie Fears' was among the first to receive the newly designed class ring during ceremonies held on campus at the Lone Star Theater.

Fears participated in a large student group that collected signatures to petition the UT System Board of Regents to change the MASCOT and THEME.  Focus groups were formed, but most consisted of white liberals who wanted change as well.

In June of 1971, the cries of protesters were answered and the Rebels theme was abolished, and they adopted the Maverick's theme for the school spirit.

Fort Worth Swing Dance - Jitterbug was his Passion!

While researching Fort Worth SWING DANCE. Mr. Dickie-O' Fears' name would always come up when talking to the old schoolers living in Fort Worth, Texas. They said that he will always be well known as one of their most noble dancers of all time.

Dickie-O' loved entering local dance competitions. He would win 99 percent of the time with different dance partners at night clubs in his neck of the woods.

Dickie-O' was also known to be a crowd-pleaser. During my research, it was very pleasing to hear that many of the local folks enjoyed seeing his advanced dance moves when he would compete, even more, than in a regular social dance setting.

Some even mentioned that he was a REAL class act on and off the dance floor during his era.
"He's Gone, But Never Forgotten."

Above are former dance partner Dickie-O' Fears, and the lovely Ms. Delores Marsh. They dance together for over 30 plus years in social settings.

Special thanks to Mr. J.C. Dickie Fears, for walking through the path of life with his human dignity on display.  He inspired others around him for decades to embrace their faith in God, dream big, set goals, and achieve one's desire due to their own hard work and self-determination.

 Originator: Bad Brad

Mr. Lawrence Bradley aka "BAD BRAD" grew up in the Stop-Six neighborhood located in the Fort Worth, Texas area. At the age of 10 years old, he started dancing. When he turned 18, he entered the military. He was stationed at Fort Hood, TX. On his weekend pass, he would frequently travel back to the Fort Worth area just so that he could frequent the local night clubs.

Back in the day, BAD BRAD two favorite night clubs were the Riviera Night Club and the Electric Circus Night Club both of which were located on the corner of Riverside Dr. and Berry St. in Fort Worth. TX.

This is where it all started for Mr. Bad Brad; he found himself entering into his first swing-out dance competition where he neither won nor placed in the first round. Thereafter, he began to practice more and more and his love for Swing Dance blossomed from there. In 1969 he would give free dance lesson to his fellow classmates at the Tarrant County College. The dance social was such a big hit at the college some of the school official's donated the group of students a jukebox.

In 1994 Mr. Bad Brad became co-owner of Steppers Night Club in Grand Prairie, Texas working with Mr. Ivan Jordan, and a new style of swing dancing broke out, and the rest is history.

Legend: Cheryl Head

Ms. Cheryl Head started teaching Swing dance at Coaches Corner in Dallas after the owner Mr. Frank Jones saw her and Tommy Pye a.k.a Terrible "T" dancing. When time allowed, Mr. Jones talked to Cheryl about teaching because he wanted a lady to teach the dance at his club and Cheryl told him to give her sometime to think it over, because at that same time.  Tommy Pye wasn't able to do it because he was already teaching at Gold Rush. Soon after Cheryl received a call from Ms. Carol of Coaches Corner asking her again if she would consider teaching at the club, so she did.

Her first night was in April of 1998 on a Wednesday night. Her first student was JR a "longtime" member of Coaches, and Ms. Nicole.  From that point on her class size grew larger. Some of her students are names you know such as Peewee a.k.a. The Peoples Champ, Jeff Hawk - GIGI's Jazz, Jerry Palmer - Art Of Motion, Dominique Martin - Next level Swing, and Joe Mennins who has passed away.

Cheryl was the first female teacher in the Dallas area along with Tommy Pye at The Gold Rush. These two they joined forces graduating over 100 students in the first year along.  There class sizes continued to grow rapidly, and they all just enjoyed the fun of Swing dance. The first Swing-out contest was also held at Coaches Corner. It was a great event with a cash prize going to Mr. Jerry Palmer and his dance partner Sabrina. After that Mr. Jerry Palmer took over teaching Swing dance at Coaches Corner.

Master Instructor: Ms. Cheryl Head

Greetings and thanks, for viewing the photo album above! The photo highlights are from Coaches Corner SWING-OUT Reunion Jam that was held back on Sunday, June 10, 2012 where Ms. Cheryl Head received accolades from being the first Swing Dance instructor to teach at that establishment.

Thank You!

Legend: Hitman Johnson

In Loving Memory
Willie Calvin "Hitman" Johnson
SEPTEMBER 15, 1956 ~ MARCH 11, 2019
~~~~
Mr. Willie Calvin “Hitman” Johnson was born in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, class of 1975. In school, he was a member of the band and a vivid athlete where he gained the nickname “Hitman.” While playing football, he later became a star player for the “Cow-Town Cowboys,” a semi-pro team. Mr. Johnson retired from the City of Fort Worth after numerous years of employment and pursued a career with Durham School Service Transportation.
Willie "Hitman" Johnson will be remembered for his passion, “Swing-Out and Step Dancing.” He won many contests and later even became a dance instructor. A legend was born...and the rest is history. He was happiest when he was surrounded by the many people he cared about and, if you would dance, he’d dance. And if you didn’t, he’d dance anyway.
Memories are cherished by his dearest friend and dance partner “Lady Champagne,” the DFW dance community, a host of other relatives and friends.
Hitman Johnson held his first swing-out class in 1993\94 in Fort Worth, Texas at a club called Honey's teaching with Ms. Carman. He officially started working at STEPPERS Nightclub in Grand Prairie, Texas where Swing Dance lessons were being taught, and then later started another class at the TIPP TOP nightclub in Forth Worth with Ms. Carman and Lady Champagne.
Hitman has always been a big hit on the dance floor with his smooth, elegant style of dancing and showcasing. You can always see Hitman offering many styles of swing dancing using his Hat to showcase some of his moves. He has taught at several locations within the DFW area including American Legion Hall, Club Ice, the Holland Hills in Fort Worth, Sugar Daddy's, Swing Dance Studio, Coaches Corner and the Diamonds Club in Dallas. You could often hear his name mentioned on the local radio station for swing out lessons.
Master Instructor: Mr. Hitman Johnson
His accomplishments include the five-time winner in DFW Swing dance competitions and the respect among the swing out community which he has rightly deserved.
Legend: Lady Champagne
Lady Champagne has been Swing dancing for over 35 years as of 2010 and has been a  multi-talented performer since an early age, she shares her love of entertainment with anyone she comes in contact with. Lady Champagne and husband Kevin "DJ Smooth K" have hosted large dance classes at more than fifteen locations throughout the DFW Metroplex including Gold Rush, Rumerz, Visions, Coaches Corner, 67 Club, Club Legends, The Chit Chat Club, several churches and recreation centers.
Furthermore; you can often pick her students our of the crowd by the technique style, and grace they exhibit. Lady Champagne has taught swing-out, lyrics, and modeling classes in the DFW area for over two decades, graduating over 1000 students from her swing-out dance classes alone. Teaching not just the basic line dance swing-out steps, but she makes sure that her students can actually get out on the dance floor around town, and dance with who they ever so desire to do so with, on any given day of the week.
Master Instructor: Lady Champagne
Greetings and thanks, for viewing the above photo highlights of Lady Champagne's 2009 Swing-Out dance class at EXCUSES in Dallas.  For all the latest information regarding her dance classes, please visit her Facebook page.
Legend: Tracy Maloney
Mr. Tracy Maloney  first learned to swing dance from the Masters of Swing - Oldheads, and The Originators of DFW Swing Dance (Tommy Pye, Lawrence Bradley, and D' Extra) at Club Steppers in Grand Prairie, Texas where beginners, intermediate and advanced swing lessons were being taught.
After graduating Tracy would eventually start teaching at Phat Katz in Dallas for over five years graduating over approximately 1000 plus students. Some referred to his dance classes as a production machine for DFW Swing-Out. His dance classes were known to be one of the largest in the Dallas area at that time.
Even though Tracy has officially retired from teaching swing dance, you may still see him from time to time as master of ceremonies at various swing events in Dallas, Houston and in the Oklahoma City area as well.
Master Instructor: Tracy Maloney
Greetings and thanks, for viewing the above photos from another one of Mr. Tracy Maloney's "PHAT KATZ" special events that took place on Friday,  April 26, 2013, at Rumors Bar and Grill in Dallas, TX.
Legend: Jerry Palmer
Mr. Jerry Palmer moved to Dallas, Texas for Mililani, Hawaii in February of 1999. He took his first Swing Dance Class from Cheryl Head at Coaches Corner Night Club in 2001. After graduating from her class he attended Terrible "T" Swing-Out dance class at the Gold Rush night Club in Dallas. In the spring of 2002, he competed for the National Title in Washington D.C. and won!
Jerry thought be could dance until he went to Club Steppers in Grand Prairie, and saw some of the best dancers in the DFW area. So for the next 41\2 weeks, he would go to Club Steppers and watch and learn the Art of Swing Dance from the best of the best. In the fall of 2002, Jerry started teaching Swing Dance.
The following is a list of places where he has taught dance classes as of 2010, and the rest is history: Diamonds, Coaches Corner, Club Blue, Stone Trail, Dreams, Club life, TraPhe, Chrome, Rockafella, Dallas City Limits, Blackberries, Cobalt-Houston, Texas, Rhea's-Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Mable's-Shreveport, Louisiana, Bogalusa's, Maxwell's, Addison City Limit's, Carson's Live, Club Sting, Addison Hanger, White Linen Affair, Club Bacy's plus year's of workshops all in the name of Dance!
 Acknowledgment: Mr. Dennis Cotton
A very special thank you goes to Mr. Dennis Cotton the owner of SWING TIME ENTERTAINMENT. Over a decade ago, his organization played a major role in bridging the gap between dance communities such as; Dallas, Fort Worth, Killeen, Austin, Houston, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
Back in 2008 when I took my first dance class at Crystal's Nightclub under the teaching of D'Extra.  My former classmates, all they would talk about before and after class was how they can't wait for "First Friday" social dance held at the Stirling Hotel in downtown Dallas hosted by; Mr. Dennis Cotton to roll around once again.
They, as well as other dancers during that time,  spoke highly about what a "GRAND OLD TIME" they would have at his monthly event because it was one of the greatest assets to be added to the DFW dance community during that era of time.
 Respectfully,
Mrs. Beverly Hilton
